How to Avoid a Botched Gynecomastia Surgery

How to Avoid a Botched Gynecomastia Surgery

When it comes to surgery to restore a more masculine appearance to your chest, many things can go wrong if your surgeon isn’t experienced in this specific condition. If you’re not working with a qualified and experienced doctor, you could end up with unsatisfying results that look terrible and might require a corrective procedure to look more natural and effective. This blog post will discuss tips to avoid botched plastic surgery so that you can feel confident about your procedure.

Do Your Research

It is vital that you do your research when it comes to finding a plastic surgeon for male breast reduction surgery. You want to ensure that you work with a board-certified physician who has extensive experience in treating multiple grades and types of gynecomastia. One of the reasons Dr. Miguel Delgado founded Gynecomastia.org is to help men educate themselves on their condition and their options for treating gynecomastia before getting a recommendation from someone who may or may not be an expert in the field.

Once you’ve found a few doctors in your area that you’re confident might be able to handle your case, your consultation appointment is the perfect time to ask any questions you have about the procedure and their qualifications. Don’t forget to check out before-and-after photos of the doctor’s previous gynecomastia patients. This will give you a good idea of their skill level and what you can expect from your results. Please make sure you are comfortable with the doctor and their staff; you should feel like you can trust them and that they have your best interests at heart.

Don’t Choose a Surgeon Based on Price

It’s important to remember that you get what you pay for when it comes to plastic surgery for gynecomastia. If you choose a surgeon offering bargain pricing, there’s a good chance they are cutting corners somewhere. They might be using lower-quality tools, or perhaps they’re not as experienced as other surgeons. A higher price is almost always worth it because a higher-priced surgery with a more experienced surgeon increases your chance of having great, long-lasting results compared to cheaper options that may put you at risk of complications and require revision procedures.

Realistic Expectations

Coming into your surgery with realistic expectations is always helpful because you don’t want to feel disappointed after your surgery. Each patient has different concerns they want to address and varying types of gynecomastia; if your condition is more severe, your surgical plan might be more complicated and involve multiple steps that might make the recovery period longer, for example. Gynecomastia surgery can create dramatic improvements, but your outcome is still limited by the reality of incisions, tissue removal, and liposuction, for example.

Make Sure You Are Healthy

It’s essential to be in good health before you undergo any surgery, including male breast reduction. You should not have any active infections, and your body weight should not be too high or fluctuating severely. If you have any medical conditions or take prescription medication, disclose them to your surgeon so that they can make the necessary alterations to surgical techniques used (especially anesthesia) and determine whether you are a candidate for surgery. It’s also important to quit smoking before surgery. Smoking can increase your risk of complications, and slow down the healing process because it constricts the blood vessels.

San Francisco Gynecomastia Specialist Offers 7 Tips on Choosing a Male Breast Reduction Surgeon

Dr. Miguel Delgado shares key pieces of advice on what to look for in a prospective gynecomastia surgeon for males seeking treatment.

San Francisco, CA — Board-certified plastic surgeon Miguel Delgado, MD is globally recognized as a top authority on the surgical treatment of gynecomastia, a condition characterized by excessive male breast tissue that can create the appearance of a more feminine-looking chest in boys and men. Having personally performed over 5,000 gynecomastia surgeries—also known as male breast reductions—Dr. Delgado has been featured for his expertise and innovative methodologies on numerous national and international gynecomastia treatment documentaries, including broadcasts by Fox News, BBC, Discovery Australia, and more. He is also the medical director of Gynecomastia.org, the largest online gynecomastia forum in the world.

As a gynecomastia specialist, Dr. Delgado is uniquely qualified to offer advice on all aspects of care for males seeking treatment for this condition—including what to look for in a potential physician. In regard to choosing a male breast reduction surgeon, he shares the following 7 tips on choosing a male breast reduction surgeon:

  • Ensure they are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which indicates that a doctor has received extensive training and passed rigorous testing specific to plastic surgery.
  • Verify membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), which are prestigious medical organizations centered around continuing education and the advancement of plastic surgery.
  • Confirm they are in good standing with all medical boards, which is a reflection of their commitment to patient safety and ethics.
  • Make sure they are highly experienced in gynecomastia surgery, paying particular attention to how long they have been performing male breast reduction and how many gynecomastia patients they have successfully treated.
  • View numerous before-and-after photos of their male breast reduction cases, as these are indicative of their surgical talent and the quality of results they are capable of achieving.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials left by previous gynecomastia patients, which can provide insight into the level of care to be expected from a particular surgeon.
  • Schedule a consultation to make sure there is a strong rapport, good communication, and an overall sense of comfort and confidence in the knowledge and skill of the surgeon—as well as the support and kindness of their staff.

Ultimately, Dr. Delgado notes that if anything seems wrong or does not meet one’s expectations when evaluating a potential male breast reduction surgeon, the search should continue. “Selecting a gynecomastia surgeon is not a decision that should be rushed or made without significant consideration, as choosing the right provider is critical to receiving top-quality care and excellent final results. You should be completely confident in your surgeon’s training, certifications, experience, skill, demeanor, and overall practice environment—including the competency of his or her staff—and only then should you move forward with treatment.”

Gynecomastia Surgery Grade 2

Dr. Delgado is in the operating room today with two cases. One is a standard gynecomastia surgery for a grade 2 patient and the other is a revision surgery. In this video snippet, he shows his technique for the standard gynecomastia surgery procedure.

The gland excision with liposuction is the most common gynecomastia surgery that plastic surgeons perform. Forty-five percent of Dr. Delgado’s surgeries are revision gynecomastia cases, and the most common reason for revision surgery is the original surgeon did not remove the breast gland. Some surgeons feel that a good result can be achieved with liposuction-only, but it does not address the gland component.

If you are considering surgery for gynecomastia, make sure that your plastic surgeon addresses the breast gland tissue.

Beauty Tourism is Causing A Rising Need For Surgical Revisions

Beauty Tourism is Causing A Rising Need For Surgical Revisions

Surgical Revisions procedures

The primary reason for Beauty Tourism is the relatively lower cosmetic surgery and aesthetics treatment cost. The next top reason is that many medical tourists have the opportunity to explore the host city or country after getting their treatment done. However, the lack of stringent regulations and clinical standards is often overlooked or does not pose as a deterrent. These inadequacies often lead to the need for revisionary work and additional corrective treatments, which may lead to additional expenses.

According to Dr. Ivan Puah, frequent complaints of patients who went through such experience include the lack of medical follow-up, miscommunication, improper preparation, and incomplete procedure counseling. Despite these real unfortunate experiences, botched procedures have seen an alarming rise in 2019, as observed by Dr. Puah.

He also noted that some botched liposuction was experienced locally as well. Some of the common complications he has seen include:

  • Uneven dents or depressions on treated areas due to overly aggressive liposuction techniques,
  • Asymmetry or uneven lumps and bumps on the treated areas due to reasons such as a poor selection of patients (i.e. patients are not suitable for liposuction), lack of experience or skills of the doctors, and
  • Excessive post-liposuction tissue scarring due to improper use of liposuction equipment, high-definition liposuction performed by poorly-trained doctors.

Dr. Ivan Puah has also seen a rise in complications resulting from high-definition liposuction procedures. The procedure, which creates a more defined musculature is a more specialized form of liposuction and should only be performed by a qualified and well-trained doctor. Excessive scarring and uneven skin textures can happen if it is not done properly or by a suitably-trained doctor. Nonetheless, calamities as such can be addressed and corrected with VASER Liposuction.

VASER Liposuction enables a doctor to sculpt and shape a patient’s physique more efficiently. It uses patented ultrasonic soundwave energy to liquefy unwanted fat cells in targeted areas, leaving surrounding important connective tissues and blood vessels undisturbed. Additionally, patients experience lesser downtime and discomfort. VASER Lipo is particularly competent in addressing botched liposuction results.

Botched procedures should not be left uncorrected or untreated as patients may suffer significant physical and psychological trauma after botched treatment. As such, corrective surgery when performed adequately can help these patients to improve their clinical condition and self-confidence.

Medical Director of Amaris B. Clinic Dr Ivan Puah Predicts 2020 Cosmetic Surgery Trend

Dr. Ivan Puah has spent more than 15 years performing FDA-approved injectables, skin lasers, and body sculpting surgical procedures. From his patients’ diverse concerns, he predicts the cosmetic surgery trends for 2020.

Dr-Ivan-Puah

SINGAPORE, Jan. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Ivan Puah, Medical Director of Amaris B. Clinic, who is accredited by the Ministry of Singapore to perform surgical body sculpting treatments, has seen a plethora of diverse concerns from 25- to 65-year-old male and female patients in Singapore.

1. Rejuvenation Biostimulation Is The Treatment That Is Getting Popular With The Advent Of Tech Device Usage

As more people rely and get subconsciously overly fixated on their modern communication devices such as smartphones and laptops, Dr. Ivan Puah has noticed a rise in the case of Text Neck. Text Neck describes the pain and damage sustained on the neck and shoulders from looking down at one’s device for an extended period. The physical stress causes skin damage on the neck leading to visible deep horizontal lines across the neck.

One of the most effective treatments for this is a treatment called Rejuvenation Biostimulation. It is the use of hyper-diluted calcium hydroxyapatite fillers that stimulates stem cells into regenerating collagen in combination with the use of energy devices that produces focused ultrasound energy. “These combined modalities can effectively improve facial and necklines as it encourages skin rejuvenation,” Dr. Ivan Puahsaid.

2. Gynecomastia, or Enlarged Male Breasts, Is More Common Than You Think

Gynecomastia occurs when excess glandular tissue is produced. When an abundance or excess fat appears in the chest area, it is known as pseudogynecomastia (fake/faux gynecomastia), which can be treated with liposuction alone. “In my experience, most patients who complained of pseudogynecomastia are later found to have true gynecomastia after medical assessment,” shared Dr. Puah.

Due to the high volume of patients I see regarding their gynecomastia concerns over the years, I have designed a customized 4-step gynecomastia surgery program called 4D Chest Remodelling. It reduces fat tissues and removes excess glandular tissues while stimulating the production of subdermal collagen to induce tissue remodeling and production of new collagen and elastin.” Unlike the standard gynecomastia surgery, 4D Chest Remodelling is a more complex treatment modality especially planned for those whose ultimate objective is to achieve a flatter and sculpted chest using high definition body sculpting technique.

3. Nose Enhancement With Thread Lift Is Gaining Fast Popularity

Nose Thread Lift is quickly becoming one of the more sought-after treatments when it comes to achieving a more natural appearance. It is a treatment that is surpassing the popularity of nose fillers when it comes to non-surgical rhinoplasty. “The reasons for the decline in popularity of nose fillers include complications and migration of fillers,” said Dr. Ivan Puah.

HIKO Nose Thread Lift uses absorbable PDO thread to achieve a higher nose bridge without the need for surgery. These threads are placed carefully in the nose to heighten the nose bridge. Dr. Puah added, “PDO material has been in use for more than 30 years in various medical disciplines such as plastic surgery and gynecology treatments because of its high tensile strength, good pliability, and smooth tissue passage.

4. Natural Look & Customised Treatments Are Much Preferred

“Unlike the past where many preferred dramatic results, my patients today are opting for treatments that produce natural-looking results. This includes facial and body enhancement treatments with fat grafting,” shared Dr. Puah.

Facial Fat Grafting’s goal is to restore lost volume to the face, which is often associated with youthfulness. It uses a patient’s own fat tissue, in tiny amounts, removed from excess fat pockets and then injected into areas of the face where needed.

For fat grafting on the body, ADR-C Breast Enhancement is popular among women who are looking to add volume to their chest while removing stubborn pockets of fat on the body. It works by removing fat tissues using the micro-lipo technique from parts of the body where there is a substantial amount of fat, such as the abdomen or saddlebags. The fat is centrifuged to maintain the integrity of the fat cells and then injected into the areas in the breast where the volume is lacking.

5. Hourglass Body Shape Is Out. Toned Body Is In

The hourglass body shape, as commonly seen in the media, is one of the body types that most women covet. “In Asia, however, the hourglass body shape is not the preferred body shape but the toned body is,” said Dr. Ivan Puah. Hourglass body shape comprises of a pair of voluptuous breasts, a small waist, and curvaceous hips. He added, “Many Asian women do not like heavy bottoms as it resembles a pear shape and they have instead expressed their preference for the toned and proportionate look – one that complements their frame and height.”
