Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia has been given the slang term “man-boobs” because it causes the growth of breast tissue in men. There are five main types of gynecomastia:
- Teenage Gynecomastia: This occurs between the ages of 10-13 and usually goes away but can persist into adulthood for about 5% of cases.
- Adult Gynecomastia: This is often caused by undiagnosed adolescent gynecomastia but can also be caused by hormonal or drug-induced conditions.
- Steroid-induced Gynecomastia: Anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders can cause adverse effects like the development of breast tissue.
- Medication-induced gynecomastia
- Pseudogynecomastia: Unlike true gynecomastia, this type is caused by weight gain and is the accumulation of fatty tissue in the breast area.
Gynecomastia Causes
Gynecomastia is often caused by a hormonal change during puberty or as a result of certain diseases, but it is also associated with antidepressants, antibiotics, and illegal drugs such as steroids, marijuana, and heroin. Other than hormonal changes and drugs, gynecomastia has also been associated with phytoestrogen-rich foods that reduce the production of testosterone. Some of these foods include flax seed, nuts (specifically almonds, pistachios, and peanuts), dried fruit like raisins and apricots, eggs, and dairy products.
Gynecomastia Diagnosis
Gynecomastia not only causes enlarged breasts, but also puffy nipples, firm lumps under the nipple, enlarged areolas, pain, and, in rare cases, nipple discharge. A gynecomastia pinch test will determine whether you have true gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia, an enlargement caused solely by fatty tissue, not breast tissue. You may also be given a blood test if the cause of your gynecomastia symptoms is difficult to pinpoint.
Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia surgery is the most effective treatment to get rid of breast tissue and resolve gynecomastia symptoms. A combination of liposuction and breast tissue excision can restore the masculine appearance of the male chest and is effective for about 80% of men with gynecomastia.
Medication such as Gynexin, Gynectrol, and GyneMax is also being used to treat gynecomastia and acts as a fat burner. While these medications can improve symptoms, they only target fat, not glandular breast tissue which is the underlying cause of gynecomastia. Anti-estrogen drugs have also been used to treat gynecomastia but have mainly been effective to treat pseudogynecomastia.
