Gynecomastia affects men of all ages, leading to excess fat or glandular tissue in the chest that makes the area look less masculine than desired. In many cases, enlarged male breasts are most effectively treated through customized male breast reduction surgery procedures. This procedure should always be taken seriously and performed by a trusted expert in the specific male breast reduction procedure, beyond general plastic surgery experience.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes men to develop enlarged breasts. Enlarged breast tissue can take the appearance of puffy nipples, enlarged areolas, hard lumps beneath the skin, or rounded, sagging breasts. Different symptoms are attributed to different causes such as hormone imbalance, steroid use, or certain antibiotics and antidepressants.

Sometimes gynecomastia will go away on its own if it is attributed to the hormonal changes that young boys go through during puberty. This is called teenage gynecomastia. If gynecomastia symptoms continue into a man’s early 20s and develop into adult gynecomastia, they should schedule an appointment with a gynecomastia specialist to receive a diagnosis and proper treatment plan.

Gynecomastia Grades

The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) has classified gynecomastia into four grades based on the severity of the breast tissue enlargement:

Grade 1 Gynecomastia

Grade 1 (or category 1) is classified as a small degree of enlargement and is usually not noticeable with clothing. The breast tissue enlargement is localized around the areola or nipple as a small button of swollen tissue. Surgery might not be necessary at this stage unless the breast tissue continues to swell.

Grade 2 Gynecomastia

At this stage, the swollen breast tissue has expanded to the width of the chest and now creates the appearance of small, rounded breasts. A combination of liposuction and removal of the mammary gland is the standard male breast reduction surgery and can be performed to reduce the size of the male chest.

Grades 3-4 Gynecomastia

Grades 3-4 gynecomastia is classified as a moderate to severe amount of excess breast tissue and is now easily visible, even with clothing. Men may feel self-conscious about their feminine chest and suffer psychologically and socially. Gynecomastia surgery can alleviate both the physical and emotional symptoms of gynecomastia at these stages.

Gynecomastia Treatment in Los Angeles

Gynecomastia is most commonly treated using a surgical combination of liposuction and excision of the glandular breast tissue. The “pull-through” technique only requires a small incision and can treat Grade 1 or 2 gynecomastia. More extensive surgery to remove excess skin and tissue for a tighter chest is often needed for men with Grades 2 or 3 gynecomastia.
