The Problem with BMI
« on: March 08, 2011, 11:14:42 PM »
I've always had a problem with the BMI Index that is used today, as I just don't feel it's a reliable indicator of what one's proper weight range should be.  There are just too many variables which are not taken into consideration.  At best, I think it should only be used as an estimate of proper weight range, and I think even that is stretching it in some cases.  When people like Tom Brady, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Lebron James, Yao Ming, Brad Pitt, Will Smith and Tom Cruise are judged to be "overweight," you know something's not right.

If you are referring to the height/weight charts; you are correct.

A well muscled person would not fit the charts well and they might be calculated to have a BMI erroneously high.

Fortunately there are more accurate ways to determine BMI.
