Over the last 20 years, I have developed various surgical techniques to treat male gynecomastia effectively, safely and with minimal scarring. My goal is not only to remove the excess breast tissue and glandular tissue but to sculpt and contour the chest to be aesthetically pleasing. Minimizing complications is very important and the vast majority of my patients have a successful outcome from just one procedure. I have special expertise in treating the male chest and am one of the busiest plastic surgeons treating gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is the scientific term for enlarged breasts or “man boobs” in males. The enlarged tissue is underneath the nipple/areola and the surrounding area. It is usually a combination of both glandular tissue and fat. Gynecomastia is a very common condition found in 40- 60 % of men from ages 12 to 65.
What Causes Gynecomastia? Enlarged male breasts is usually the result of a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and estrogen in the male body. This commonly occurs during puberty and results in enlarged male breasts or true gynecomastia with firm glandular tissue that often does not go away with time. Being overweight or obese can also result in pseudogynecomastia which is more fat tissue than glandular tissue.
There are many drugs and medications that have been linked to gynecomastia including anabolic steroids, hair growth medications, blood pressure medications, stomach medications and marijuana. There are rare conditions that can cause gynecomastia such as tumors. Gynecomastia can also occur with chronic alcohol use and in men over 50 years of age. In the majority of men, we do not know what caused the gynecomastia, it just happens.
How does Dr. Adrian Lo treat Gynecomastia? Surgery is the only treatment that actually works, and Dr. Lo has helped men from age 12 to 65 finally feel comfortable with how their chest looks with gynecomastia correction surgery. Dr. Lo wants you to know that there is no medication that will effectively treat male breast enlargement or gynecomastia. Exercise and diet will not correct your gynecomastia.
The extent of the surgery depends on the cause and severity of your gynecomastia. Most patients will need a combination of advanced liposuction for sculpting and contouring the chest, with glandular removal which is called subcutaneous mastectomy. Some patients may require skin removal as well. During the 1 hour surgery, Dr. Lo will typically remove your excess breast tissue or “cut out your glands” and then advanced liposuction is performed to sculpt and contour your chest. You will have a normal looking, flat chest and flat nipples (that are no longer “puffy”) with a smaller areola.
